Rather than running ads on the Pursuing Health podcast or in email or social media campaigns, we’ve moved to a crowd sponsoring model. Pursuing Health subscriber benefits include access to our “Ask Us Anything” forum and podcasts where we answer your upvoted questions, as well as exclusive discounts from companies we truly believe in, who are aligned with our mission, and whose products or services we have used ourselves.
We don’t receive a penny from these companies, but instead pass along the value of sponsorship in the form of exclusive subscriber discount codes. This allows us to provide our community with information that is as unbiased as possible while introducing our subscribers to products and services that could positively impact their health or quality of life.
Julie worked with Rx Smart Gear as a sponsored athlete from 2014-2018, during which time Rx Smart Gear jump ropes and other tools were a staple in her CrossFit Games training and performance. Over the years we also came to know founder Dave Newman and his wife Sue who have been huge supporters and even came to our 2015 wedding. We still think that Rx Smart Gear makes the best jump ropes around and continue to use them in our training on a regular basis. They also always make their way into our luggage when we go on vacation!
We’ve been logging our workouts on Beyond the Whiteboard almost since the first day we both started at a CrossFit affiliate together in the summer of 2009 – that’s a LOT of data, and Beyond the Whiteboard organizes that data in a way that’s incredibly powerful. There were many occasions where a CrossFit Games workout would be announced and in the few minutes before her heat was called, Julie would check her Beyond the Whiteboard app for notes on how she approached similar workouts in the past to guide her strategy. We both still use Beyond the Whiteboard daily to track our workouts and the trajectory of our fitness – together we’ve logged over 12,000 sessions in the past 10 years! In more recent years, we’ve used Beyond the Whiteboard to administer our training programs and our annual Christmas Marathon Row fundraiser. We also love using their lifestyle log, macros feature, and “squads” to connect with training partners.
Nutritional ketosis has been studied as a tool for weight loss as well as a variety of health conditions including type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, and cognitive decline. Recently, the “Keto Diet” has become somewhat of a nutrition fad, but safe and proper implementation of this therapy requires careful monitoring of blood ketones as well as supervision by a health professional. We have experimented with nutritional ketosis ourselves, and find the Keto-Mojo meter to be a reliable and user-friendly way to track blood glucose and ketones.
A big cup of coffee topped with some frothy nutpods creamer is our favorite way to start the day. The antioxidents in coffee are responsible for many of its reported health benefits, but not all coffee is created equal. We’ve been on a search for the highest quality, best tasting coffee beans and we finally found what we’ve been looking for with Purity Coffee. Purity only sources organic beans and tests all of their coffee for mold, pesticides, and mycotoxins. They also use a roasting process that aims to retain maximum antioxidants while reducing the formation of byproducts that can have negative health effects such as PAHs. When compared to over 100 other coffees, Purity ranked highest in antioxidant levels, while also being free of mold and mycotoxins. Given the emphasis on quality, we were expecting to have to sacrifice on flavor but boy, were we wrong! This is some of the best coffee we’ve had, period. Purity Coffee is now a staple in our household – they even have decaf beans for when you’re trying to avoid caffeine and coffee pods for when you’re on the go.
We believe meat has an important place in a well-rounded diet, but just as with any other food, it’s the processing that can make or break it’s impact on our health. There’s a huge difference between meat from animals raised in feedlots that are fed primarily corn and soy and routinely given growth hormones and antibiotics, and those that are responsibly raised in their natural environment and fed their natural diet. It can be hard to find high-quality meat like this, but Butcher Box has been a lifesaver for us because they deliver 100% grass-fed and finished beef, free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork, and wild Alaskan sockeye salmon directly to your doorstep. All of their products are humanely raised and never given antibiotics or hormones. It’s not only convenient to receive our shipment every month, but it also gives us peace of mind to know that we can trust our meat is the highest-quality out there and will taste amazing.
Since going dairy free in 2012, we struggled to find a coffee creamer that stacked up. We tried it all, from full-fat coconut milk to homemade nut milks and everything in between. It wasn’t until we discovered Nutpods after Julie’s mom supported their kickstarter campaign that we met our coffee creamer match, and the rest is history. You can call us Nutpods’ biggest fans – our pantry is always stocked, we keep some at work, and we never travel without it (Julie has been known to carry a carton in her purse to restaurants and coffee shops!).
When Julie discovered Dr. Valter Longo’s research on the fasting-mimicking diet (FMD), she had to learn more. It wasn’t long before she had the opportunity to interview Dr. Longo on her Pursuing Health podcast and dive into the details behind how a 5-day period of calorie restriction every few months has been shown to improve cellular rejuvenation, resistance to chronic disease, and longevity. Dani and Julie first took this experiment on ourselves in the summer of 2019 and found ProLon to be an incredibly powerful tool for implementing this science-backed intervention. We also love Dr. Longo’s commitment to remain unbiased in his research, and although he has played a key role in the development ProLon kit he doesn’t take a penny from it’s sales. We plan to continue with a FMD ourselves twice per year for our general health, and have guided some of our patients in using it as a powerful tool for various health conditions.
The health benefits of seafood are numerous, but consuming large amounts and especially of factory farmed fish can increase the risk of heavy metal toxicity. Vital Choice provides access to sustainably harvested seafood products of superior quality that are low in mercury and other pollutants. Although Dani is not a big seafood fan himself, Julie always keeps some Vital Choice salmon on hand in the freezer for a quick dinner at home.
We’ve been huge fans of Steve’s (formerly Steve’s Paleo Goods) over the years, and big supporters of the Steve’s Club National Program, a non-profit organization that brings fitness, nutrition, and mentorship to at-risk and underserved youth. Steve’s Paleo Kits and granola got us through many long days of med school, residency, CrossFit Games training, and travel early on, and through the years we’ve been thrilled to see Steve’s Paleo Goods on the shelves of grocery stores around the country. Our pantry is always stocked with a variety of Steve’s PaleoChef sauces (the Ketchup and Sriracha are our faves!) and we keep some grass-fed PaleoKits on hand for long clinic or travel days. We also love that 15% of our purchase goes to Steve’s Club National Program, every single time!
Nooma is a beverage company founded by two Cleveland-based brothers who were frustrated by sugar-packed artificial sports drinks while playing college and pro hockey. Together Brandon and Jarred created Nooma – an organic electrolyte drink with no sugar or artificial ingredients – that has taken the fitness community by storm from CrossFit affiliates to yoga studios. We’re lucky to have watched Nooma’s growth over the past several years and are huge cheerleaders for the company and their mission. If you ever catch us post-workout, we’ll likely have a Nooma in hand. (we’re both big chocolate mint fans! #teamgreen)
Over the past 10 years Kelly Starrett DPT revolutionized the world of mobility and rehab with MobilityWOD. We first took Kelly’s MobilityWOD seminar back in 2013 and use his teachings daily in our own training and recovery. We’ve come to know both Kelly and his wife Juliet (CEO of both MobilityWOD and their CrossFit affiliate San Francisco CrossFit) over the years and MobilityWOD previously served as a generous sponsor for the Pursuing Health podcast. In 2019, MobilityWOD was rebranded as The Ready State with an all-new Virtual Mobility Coach app that gives you personalized mobilization videos aimed to help resolve an ache or pain, warm up or cool down from a workout, or perform “maintenance” on a rest day. We find this to be an incredibly powerful and time-efficient tool for maintaining function and promoting life-long fitness.
We met Matt Stevens, DPT through our local CrossFit community in Cleveland, OH and when Julie tore her Achilles in 2015, he came through big time. Matt worked with Julie one-on-one throughout her entire rehab process including early mornings at the pool and late evenings at the gym. He was there with her every step of the way, making sure she made a full recovery and was ready to dance at our wedding a few short months later. Since then, we’ve worked closely with Matt on our TRAIN with Julie Foucher programming, for which he writes warm-ups, cool-downs, and active recovery workouts. Everything Matt does, he does with passion, skill, and integrity, and we knew Pure Endurance would be no different. Matt has teamed up with Amanda Barnhart, DPT, another amazing athlete, coach, and physical therapist who we’ve come to know and love, to provide a data-driven approach to endurance training for any fitness or experience level.
Precision Nutrition is the perfect starting place not only to learn the basic science of nutrition but also how to create lasting behavior change. As anyone knows who’s tried to make nutrition changes, knowledge is not enough. This elegantly designed course covers material in a self-paced, easy-to-understand format that rivals many of the university-level courses we’ve taken. It’s a resource we certainly wish we had when we were in medical school, and now Precision Nutrition is making it available to Pursuing Health subscribers at a fraction of its regular price.
Thorne is one of the leading pharmaceutical-grade supplement companies in the world in large part due to their extremely rigid quality and safety practices. They follow the FDA’s cGMP guidelines and are registered with third-party authorities such as NSF. Thorne maintains their own testing facility and they publish the sourcing, testing, and research behind each ingredient used in their supplements publicly on their website. Julie uses the Thorne Basic Prenatal as it’s the highest quality prenatal she could find, and we frequently recommend other Thorne supplements to our patients based on their personalized needs.
Puori was founded in 2009 in Denmark. Like us, they believe that health is an ever-evolving journey centered around making quality decisions rooted in a preventative lifestyle and a holistic approach to health. Where the modern diet falls short in nourishing us with the nutrients we need, Puori provides some of the highest-quality natural supplements in world. Julie served as a Puori ambassador during her CrossFit Games years from 2012-2019 and developed a close relationship with the founders. We are consistently impressed by their commitment to quality amidst a supplement industry that is largely unregulated.
